Last Year Review

Review by Phyllis -- yes, pictures are coming soon! Other reviews invited - what did you think?

The first Poly Camping / Caving weekend was held July 25, 26, 27, 1999 at Seneca Rocks, West Virginia.

It was organized by Mike (caving enthusiast) and Phyllis (West Virginia contact) with significant involvement from TriState Poly (NYC/NJ/Conn poly group); CPN (DC, NoVa, Baltimore area poly group); and HARP (Hampton Roads/Norfolk area poly group.) Over 30 people attended in all.

The impromptu Friday evening potluck went surprisingly well, with a good chance to get to know folks.

The caving trip on Sunday was wonderful, though we were delayed getting started because of having to check out of cabins and pack camp first. Most of us even braved the "stream passage", though the water level was so low we had a relatively easy time of it.

We really enjoyed meeting folks from other areas, as well as to have lots of nice social time with those we already knew. And the cabin/campground worked out pretty well, although those in the farther cabins were a little isolated (tho I gather some of them were having their own fun!)

On the "do better next time" -- the canoeing trip on Saturday was a real "learning experience"!! Between most of us being rank beginners, and the water level in the river being really low (which meant much bumped bottoms, walking of canoes, and frustrations) it was a much longer and more exhausting trip than we anticipated. It certainly gave us all that "we survived the river together" feeling -- but we were too late and too tired by the time we got back to camp to participate much in the planned Saturday night activities. So the interest groups never happened, and the potluck/campfire participation was spotty.

Who ever said that polyfolk sometimes try to do too much with not enough time? We'll keep working on those poly-time-priority skills!
